The Story

UNO Flip! was released by Mattel in 2019 as a double-sided reinvention of the core game. Every one of the 112 cards is printed with a standard "Light Side" on one face and a tougher "Dark Side" on the reverse, so a single physical deck plays as two different rule sets depending on which side is face-up. The design leans on UNO's shedding-game roots while adding a genre trick — flipping the entire table's cards over mid-game — that has since been reused in several officially licensed Flip editions (Marvel, Stranger Things, and others).

Rule Twists vs. Classic UNO

Everything below is an official printed rule unless flagged otherwise.

Light Side / Dark Side

The deck, both players' hands, and both piles are always oriented to the same side. The Light Side uses the familiar red/yellow/green/blue palette and milder action cards; the Dark Side uses pink/orange/teal/purple and harsher penalties for the same card positions.

The Flip card

Playing a Flip card immediately turns every card in play — the draw pile, the discard pile, and every player's hand — over to the opposite side. The Flip card itself is identical on both faces, so play continues without a gap.

Stacking Draw cards

Community

Some player groups stack Draw One on Draw One or Draw Five on Draw Five to pass on a growing penalty. Mattel's official Flip instructions do not include stacking.

Special Cards & Action Rules

Flip one per color, both sides · 8 in deck

Flips the entire game — draw pile, discard pile, and all hands — from Light Side to Dark Side or vice versa. Only playable on a matching color or another Flip card.

Draw One (Light Side) one per color · 8 in deck

Next player draws 1 card and loses their turn. Light Side only — becomes Draw Five on the Dark Side of the same physical card.

Skip (Light Side) / Skip Everyone (Dark Side) one per color · 8 in deck

Light Side: next player loses their turn. Dark Side: every other player loses their turn and the card's player goes again immediately.

Reverse one per color, both sides · 8 in deck

Reverses turn order. Identical effect on both the Light and Dark Side.

Wild colorless, both sides · 4 in deck

Playable on any card; the player names the next color.

Wild Draw Two (Light Side) colorless · 4 in deck

Only playable if the current player has no card matching the top card's color. Next player draws 2 and loses their turn, or may challenge; an illegal play means the player who played it draws 2 instead.

Wild Draw Color (Dark Side) colorless · 4 in deck

The Dark Side face of the Wild Draw Two card. The player names a color; the next player must draw cards one at a time, revealing each, until they draw a card of that color.

Draw Five (Dark Side) one per color · 8 in deck

The Dark Side face of the Draw One card. Next player draws 5 cards and loses their turn.
